This is a simple method to protect the stump after amputation. 31% of patients in the amputee unit experienced a fall during a nine month assessment period. Stump trauma or fracture & fear of falling again or loss of confidence, respectively are among serious physical & psychological events fallen amputee patients can experience.
RRD protects the stump from trauma. It also allows for easy wound inspection for the physician. The dressing is removed for wound care, dressing change, wound inspection and then easily reapplied for protection. A fall while recovering can cause new wounds, new surgery, and prolong being fit with a prosthesis. Falls are also very costly for hospitals as they are a “never event”.
